Why you can’t create a badge at lastfm.freedig.org

After receiving more and more questions why lastfm.freedig.org doesn’t work, I will explain what this “This service is currently disabled.” message is all about.

Also read Update for lastfm.freedig.org.

I have my website(s) stored on a shared server with 1GB space. At the moment the badges use about 600MB of this space. As I also have other stuff saved on this server I had to limit the number of badge-registrations to 6250 6000 30000.
If the page says “This service is currently disabled. Please check back later.” that means that currently there are more than 6250 6000 30000 badges.
Badges that haven’t been used for 2 months are deleted every hour. Once the number of badges drops below 6250 6000 30000 you will be able to create new badges.

An idea would be to only have the badges up for an hour after creation, and make the users upload them onto a free image server such as imageshack. it’s not like it’s going to hurt them or anything.

Although, if they do save it to an image hosting site, and it’s one of those badges about plays; it won’t change the play count every time someone listens to a song…

I thought about that, but I already have problems to keep the traffic low. In fact I have to think about a way to reduce it.
Last month (October) my websites weren’t accessible the last 3 days. It seems as if “unlimited traffic” means “100000MB” for my provider. :P

Well…if it was that easy I would have done that long ago ;)
The problems with free hosting usually are ads, missing features I need (for example a mysql database) or restricted functionality (especially allow_url_fopen in PHP is often turned off which means I can’t use the last.fm api at all)

How about donations ? I am sure that many users would share at least few bucks for the project or maybe just cut less popular badges options ? There are planty possibilities but I don’t know which would you find most suitable. But just as I said those two options are the best in my opinion. Good luck and thanks for great last.fm feature ;)

There are currently only 5,883 badges, but the service is still disabled… disappointing. I’ve been trying to create one of these badges for WEEKS!

When I click “Upload Image”, a popup appears but it just shows a image-placeholder that disappears fast. When I click “OK” in the popup and then “Create”, it says “please choose a theme”.

I tried with jpg, png and gif. I use Firefox 3.0.6 and the newest Java.

    Hi Thomas!

    Thank you for this information.
I’m pretty annoyed that people still complain here. After all the whole badge idea is a nice gesture of you and not a service they can claim.

You can’t host all the badges on you server, that’s insane. Only provide the generator and we’ll take it from there.

    Hi, Freedig!

… I wonder little bit about your statistics of only 1 GB web space and 0.6 GB used online data storage. I suppose you wanted to argument, that you are limited by financing the web services. Such services are out of fashion since many years.

I started Internet in 1994 and I have gone through the whole process what we call dot.com same as consultant for ebizz strategies from 1997 to 2002 and experienced the big burst of this bubble. Meanwhile we arrived at web 2.0 and social communities…

parallel of this pogress all the costs for 24hx7d high speed flat rates have decreased from more than 1000 EUR midth of the 90th down to 30 EUR per month (for a 16000 DSL flatrate), disk space is cheaper than ever, you get 1 Terrabite for less than 100 EUR as mobile hard disc etc. etc. etc. …

Therefore the provider services have decreased heavily. You get fully functional huge content management systems ready out of the box, e.g. Drupal, Joomla or Wordpress, with plenty of online data space cost free (e.g. Wordpress.com offers actually 3.5 GB, eSnips.com offers 5 GB data storage free of charge).

So the question in your case is: where is the right partner who can host your “cost free services” you deliver to the last.fm online community.

I have researched during last 2 years many times about the global provider market, as I liked to switch from the cost free wordpress.com I use now for more than 2 years since May 2007 to an own server with fully functions of MySQL, Backupping, unlimited email addresses, FTP account etc. etc. etc. …

Therefore I’d like to suggest you a provider I found on my own, which is one of the best in the world.

I already host a test platform with wordpress 2.8.4 there and soon I will switch from wordpress.com where I actually ( see http://imcradiodotnet.wordpress.com) to wordpress.org version.

Meanwhile some of my closer friends even host there own websites and we are all happy with that. It is going 24 hours very smoothly… If you like to know, send me an email, as I do not like to do promotion for a company here in public area…

What I can say about: it is unlimited web space, unlimited traffic and same “wordpress” ready to use out of the box (latest version 2.8) with unlimited MySQL accounts as I see you have wordpress, all cost free (inclusive updating of wordpress versions) without any “hidden costs” (technical support worldwide cost free 24hx7d, inclusive fully email server (web based + Pop3 accounts), FTP server (public access + passord protected areas), domain hosting (inclusive unlimited subdomains) and many other features (e.g. CPanel administration)… and all this for an excellent price of round about 120 EUR (round about 170 US dollar) for a two years contract (Rec.: if you expand it to a 36 months contract even then the monthly rate gets cheaper).

If you are interested, dont hesitate to send me an email… would be cool if you can re-activate your badget for Last.FM. I have seen it the L.fm user “musicgodlything” uses it on his profile, and I’d like to have it too for my own statistics :-) . Looks really cool… great job you did :-)

Happy Friday ! – Warm regards – ElJay.

if you could provide just the generator, i’d be able to host my own badge.

i’m sure that’s the case with a lot of people, too. something to consider, maybe.

    Hello,

I can maybe give you some space – I’m installing a brand new server for myself, and have “some” space left…
I can provide, for example, 10G to you, free of charge.
Contact me if you want – I’m sure we can find a solution ;)
